Thousands?

Kim du Toit today laments how much loudmouths “influencers” make compare to humble bloggers not on salary with a syndicate:

So yes, maybe I am jealous that today’s influencers make money hand over fist each week while I have made, at a rough guess, a few thousand dollars — over twenty years — from my type of influencing.

Yeah, if you’re talking how much this blog has made me over the years, the gross income is something like…. A hundred dollars? Probably less. A couple bucks from the Amazon Affiliates program fifteen years ago, mostly because Trey bought John Donnelly’s Gold and then some throw pillows in the same order–and then he gave it a two-star review (hopefully he liked the pillows better). Google ads? A couple dollars.

That’s gross income. Minus the cost of hosting and a year of GoDaddy’s “security” subscription (managing a SSL for me) at $400 (since cancelled because I can do it for free albeit at ninety days per). So, yeah, my “influencing” has been a rather expensive hobby. If I had kept horses, at least I could have something to eat if the need arose.

And don’t get me started (again) about how useless the blog and other social media have been at pimping my side projects.
