{"id":8643,"date":"2010-12-12T07:16:54","date_gmt":"2010-12-12T13:16:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/blog\/?p=8643"},"modified":"2010-12-12T07:16:54","modified_gmt":"2010-12-12T13:16:54","slug":"the-meaning-of-education","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/blog\/2010\/12\/12\/the-meaning-of-education\/","title":{"rendered":"The Meaning of Education"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My 24th State colleague Van has a long post up at his personal blog on the <a href=\"http:\/\/blogodidact.blogspot.com\/2010\/12\/transforming-education-into-education.html\" target=\"_blank\">meaning of Education<\/a> and why modern approaches don&#8217;t Educate and are not designed to do so.<\/p>\n<p>He refers to this Cato chart that shows that costs of education have gone up drastically, but the results have not improved:<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/bsgfx\/cato.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/bsgfx\/cato.jpg\" width=\"425\" alt=\"Does this remind you of the Price is Right Mountain Climber game?\"><br \/>\n<i><font size=\"1\">Click for full size<\/font><\/i><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve discussed this very chart with a former classmate at the University, now a doctor of rhetoric and professor at a snowy university himself, and he thinks the expense justifies the outcome <em>as long as the new, expensive education elevates minority students.<\/em>  Think of it as spreading the education around.<\/p>\n<p>Were that true, it would be spending a bunch of money to elevate favored students <em>at the expense of nonfavored students<\/em> since it would statistically require an offset of lower scores for nonminority students to keep that line flat.  But to a raging liberal statist, that&#8217;s okay.
