{"id":7994,"date":"2010-09-19T15:03:25","date_gmt":"2010-09-19T20:03:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/blog\/?p=7994"},"modified":"2010-09-19T19:35:55","modified_gmt":"2010-09-20T00:35:55","slug":"no-choice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/blog\/2010\/09\/19\/no-choice\/","title":{"rendered":"It&#8217;s Only A Trade-off When You Have A Choice"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/09\/19\/science\/earth\/19clean.html?_r=2&#038;ref=science\" target=\"_blank\">same old story<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nSome longtime users were furious.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy dishes were dirtier than before they were washed,\u201d one wrote last week in the review section of the Web site for the Cascade line of dishwasher detergents. \u201cIt was horrible, and I won\u2019t buy it again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the worst product ever made for use as a dishwashing detergent!\u201d another consumer wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Like every other major detergent for automatic dishwashers, Procter &#038; Gamble\u2019s Cascade line recently underwent a makeover. Responding to laws that went into effect in 17 states in July, the nation\u2019s detergent makers reformulated their products to reduce what had been the crucial ingredient, phosphates, to just a trace. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Right.  Notice that in the named example, the corporation changed its formulation <strong>to comply with state law<\/strong>.  Now, notice how the journalist slides into talking about consumer choices:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Yet now, with the content reduced, many consumers are finding the new formulas as appealing as low-flow showers, underscoring the tradeoffs that people often face today in a more environmentally conscious marketplace. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A tradeoff occurs when people make a decision.  In some places, low-flow shower heads are still a customer choice.  Unlike, say, low flow toilets and incandescent light bulbs.<\/p>\n<p>Your governments are hard at work to eliminate the trade-offs entirely by making sure you don&#8217;t get to trade dirty dishes for ungreen conscience.
