{"id":7003,"date":"2003-07-24T19:48:00","date_gmt":"2003-07-25T00:48:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/blog\/2003\/07\/24\/7003\/"},"modified":"2018-08-02T14:59:55","modified_gmt":"2018-08-02T19:59:55","slug":"7003","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/blog\/2003\/07\/24\/7003\/","title":{"rendered":"The New Traditional"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I heard on the radio today a commercial for the <b><i>newest<\/i><\/b> and <b><i>bestest<\/i><\/b> Lasik eye surgery techniques, which explained that whatever new gimcrackatron they&#8217;ve devised certainly beats the <i>traditional<\/i> Lasik methods.<\/p>\n<p>Undoubtedly, Dr. McCoy would agree that those <i>old<\/i>, <i>traditional<\/i> means of Lasik surgery (such as those deployed against <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dynamist.com\/weblog\/archives\/2003\/jan03.html\" target=\"new\">Virginia Postrel<\/a>) were medieval butchers and that they were only one step above using leeches to suck that astigmatism right out of the eyeball.<\/p>\n<p>Pardon me, but my family doesn&#8217;t have a generations-long <i>tradition<\/i> for opening the front of the eyeball like a can of french-cut green beans and firing a computer-guided thing-we-used-to-call-a-&#8220;laser&#8221; against the retina until it scorched enough of the cones and rods to make things better, as though it was a military expedition to win over the hearts and minds of my optic nerve with napalm.  Oh, yeah, and then they close it back up, and it either works or you&#8217;re blind, oops.<\/p>\n<p>Pardon me, but I have done too much QA with computers to trust them with anything like the impressionist-themed remainder of my vision, thankyouverymuch.  Sure, I realize that the chances of failure are slim, but I buy lottery tickets with slimmer odds.<\/p>\n<p>So my traditional Lasik surgery technique is mocking the very prospect.  And as a conservative, remember, I <a href=\"http:\/\/angryclam.blogspot.com\/2003_07_01_angryclam_archive.html#105892211736575479\" target=\"new\">demonstrate<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Fear and aggression<\/b> <i>of losing what remains of my sight.<\/i>\n<li><b>Dogmatism and intolerance of ambiguity<\/b> <i>in adhering to my gruesome description of the procedure<\/i>.\n<li><b>Uncertainty avoidance<\/b> <i>because new technology bad<\/i>.\n<li><b>Need for cognitive closure<\/b> <i>so let&#8217;s just drop the subject<\/i>.\n<li><b>Terror management<\/b> <i>by thinking happy thoughts instead of Lasik procedures as I go to sleep to keep away the nightmares<\/i>.<\/ul>\n<p>So thanks, but no schnucking way thanks.<\/p>\n<p><center><font size=\"1\"><i>This sentiment guaranteed only until next midlife crisis.<\/i><\/font><\/center><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I heard on the radio today a commercial for the newest and bestest Lasik eye surgery techniques, which explained that whatever new gimcrackatron they&#8217;ve devised certainly beats the traditional Lasik methods.
