Edwards had salted his speech with a Reaganesque line expressing the hope that the United States would once again be seen by the world &#8220;as that shining city on the hill, a beacon of freedom and democracy.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Mr. Broder, but wasn&#8217;t Mr. Reagan, Esq., quoting <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mtholyoke.edu\/acad\/intrel\/winthrop.htm\" target=\"new\">Johnny Winthrop<\/a>, who was really quoting <a href=\"http:\/\/bible.gospelcom.net\/bible?passage=Matthew+5:14\" target=\"new\">Matthew 5:14<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>Life must have been so much easier when you were writing for un-educated, non-<a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\" target=\"new\">Google<\/a>abled rabble, wot?<\/p>\n<p>(Thanks to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marquette.edu\/phil\/cvs\/prendergastcv.pdf\" target=\"new\">Dr. Thomas Prendergast<\/a> at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marquette.edu\/phil\/pages\/faculty.html\" target=\"new\">Marquette University<\/a> for the pointer.
