{"id":4306,"date":"2008-03-16T15:55:00","date_gmt":"2008-03-16T15:55:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/blog\/?p=4306"},"modified":"2017-11-13T10:45:52","modified_gmt":"2017-11-13T16:45:52","slug":"lead-supports-the-main-idea","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/blog\/2008\/03\/16\/lead-supports-the-main-idea\/","title":{"rendered":"Lead Supports the Main Idea"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The first paragraph of a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/cgi-bin\/article.cgi?f=\/c\/a\/2008\/03\/16\/MNS1VJAIG.DTL\" target=\"_blank\">story<\/a> in the San Francisco Chronicle (linked on the site&#8217;s home page as THE FORGOTTEN WAR, as though the Iraq War has slipped anyone&#8217;s mind), sort of supports one of the reasons for going to war:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The war in Iraq has gone on for five years now, but there is almost no sign of it in the Bay Area, a region where 7 million people live.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Well, that was sort of the point of the flypaper strategy, wasn&#8217;t it?<\/p>\n<p>The rest of the piece is a creative writing assignment about how nobody&#8217;s protesting or the nation isn&#8217;t rising up or something.  It does, however, feature this wonderful simile:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Yet the war is a presence in the Bay Area, like an underground river, like a storm just off the coast, like a deadly illness that will not go away.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But deadly illnesses don&#8217;t go away until, I dunno, <i>you die<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>Sounds like staff writer Carl Nolte is really saying Death to America, ainna?<\/p>\n<p>I guess you could defend him by saying he&#8217;s a bad writer.<\/p>\n<p><i><font size=\"1\">P.S. I did include your name, Mr. Nolte, so you&#8217;d catch this mockery next time you google yourself.
