{"id":3991,"date":"2007-09-04T15:23:00","date_gmt":"2007-09-04T15:23:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/blog\/?p=3991"},"modified":"2017-11-24T17:38:09","modified_gmt":"2017-11-24T23:38:09","slug":"tip-of-the-ice-cube","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/blog\/2007\/09\/04\/tip-of-the-ice-cube\/","title":{"rendered":"Tip of the Ice Cube"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Newly released documents indicate WIDESPREAD TROOP ABUSES!!1!! according to the ACLU and its PR firm, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stltoday.com\/stltoday\/news\/stories.nsf\/world\/story\/EA887E13CE1F27118625734C000C7F25?OpenDocument\" target=\"_new\">AP<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Newly released documents regarding crimes committed by U.S. soldiers against civilians in Iraq and Afghanistan detail a <b>troubling pattern<\/b> of troops failing to understand and follow the rules that govern interrogations and deadly actions.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A troubling pattern of <strike>bajillions<\/strike> <strike>millions<\/strike> <strike>hundreds of thousands<\/strike> <strike>tens of thousands<\/strike> <strike>thousands<\/strike> <strike>hundreds<\/strike> almost <b>dozens<\/b> of incidents:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The documents, to be released today by the American Civil Liberties Union ahead of a lawsuit, total nearly 10,000 pages of courts-martial summaries, transcripts and military investigative reports about 22 incidents.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The system is at fault because it made the soldiers do it:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>They show repeated examples of soldiers believing they were within the law when they killed local residents.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Believing\/insisting.  Ah, how the truth is merely <i>felt<\/i>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In the suffocation, soldiers covered the man&#8217;s head with a sleeping bag, then wrapped his neck with an electrical cord for a &#8220;stress position&#8221; <b>they insisted<\/b> was an approved technique.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Defense is gospel, unless of course, it&#8217;s the military defending itself from a <i>lawsuit<\/i> designed to&#8230;.I dunno, make the military look defensive?  As a <i>defendant<\/i>?<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m glad we live under a system where this sort of thing is possible.
