Hardbacks were $1 each or 3 for $2; paperbacks were $.50 or 5 for $2; cassettes were .50 each or something; CDs were $1 each; and albums were $.25 or 5 for $1.  Which explains the carnage that was to occur:<\/p>\n<p><!--<center>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.brianjnoggle.com\/bsgfx\/gbh10.jpg\" target=\"_new\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.brianjnoggle.com\/bsgfx\/gbh10.jpg\" alt=\"Ethical Society book sale results\" width=\"425\"><br \/><font size=\"1\"><i>Click for full size<\/i><\/font><\/a><\/center>\n\n--><\/p>\n<p>I got:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><i>The Running Man<\/i>, the movie tie-in paperback.\n<li><i>How to Take a Trick a Day with Bisquick<\/i> because I&#8217;m interested in learning more about prostitutes and pastries, and <i>Through-the-Years Cookbook<\/i> because the two were a quarter together.\n<li><i>The Fall<\/i> by Camus because I have been buying Camus lately, and it has become a compulsion.\n<li><i>St. Louis: A Concise History<\/i> by William Barnaby Faherty, S.J., and <i>Gateway Guidebook<\/i> because I live here and might as well learn some trivia about it.\n<li><i>Yo, Millard Fillmore<\/i> by Will Cleveland and Mark Alvarez because I&#8217;d like to bone up on my presidential trivia.\n<li><i>Hoaxes!  Dupes, Dodges &#038; Other Dastardly Deceptions<\/i> by Gordon Stein and Marie J. MacNee because these sorts of compilations serve as good idea sources for essays and the stories I used to tell my officemate when we&#8217;d stare out the window.\n<li><i>Be Happy!<\/i>, a 1972 hardback collection of happy little thoughts simply because the book has pictures like this:\n<p><center><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.brianjnoggle.com\/bsgfx\/behappy1.jpg\" alt=\"Someone being happy\" width=\"400\"><\/p>\n<p>and<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.brianjnoggle.com\/bsgfx\/behappy2.jpg\" alt=\"Someone else being happy\" width=\"400\"><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Brother, any review of those pictures make me instantly happier.  I mean, if my sideburns ever show up in my silhouette, <i>shoot me with a silver bullet.<\/i><\/p>\n<li><i>Ernest Hemingway: A Life Story<\/i> by Carlos Baker because I think Hemingway&#8217;s writing is the bomb and I think his biography is riveting; let&#8217;s see how this guy does with it.\n<li><i>Reagan&#8217;s America<\/i> by Garry Willis and <i>Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness<\/i> by Peggy Noonan because I&#8217;ve suddenly been seized with the urge to read more about those halycon days.  I don&#8217;t think the Noonan book deals with that time period, but.\n<li><i>The Death of Common Sense: How Law is Suffocating America<\/i> by Philip K. Howard because <a href=\"http:\/\/www.overlawyered.com\" target=\"_new\">Walter Olson<\/a> shouldn&#8217;t have all the fun.\n<li><i>100 Love Sonnets<\/i> by Pablo Neruda because I&#8217;ll soon need to wash the voice of Sylvia Plath out of my head.\n<li><i>The Braille Woods<\/i>, a chapbook by Ann Townsend, simply because I could.  Chapbooks are good as they give small doses of an individual poet.\n<li><i>Dave Barry Does Japan<\/i> because I&#8217;ll need to see if he&#8217;s still as funny as I remember.\n<li><i>Strange But True: Mysterious and Bizarre People<\/i> by Thomas Slemen because (see <i>Hoaxes!<\/i> above).\n<li><i>Digital Darwinism<\/i> by Evan I. Schwartz because I think I&#8217;ll have some time for it in 2009.<\/ul>\n<p>Hmmm, I seem to have misplaced <i>Poems of Friends<\/i>, which I picked up and intended to buy.<\/p>\n<p>For audio, I got:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>My first Zamfir!\n<li><i>Timeless<\/i> by local jazz singer Anita Rosemond\n<li><i>Pure<\/i> by Hayley Westenra because she&#8217;s hot.\n<li>An Adam Sandler comedy cassette.\n<li>The <i>Grease<\/i> Soundtrack, obviously.\n<li>A record of T.S. Eliot reading his poetry, including &#8220;The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock&#8221;.\n<li>The Sinatra Christmas album.\n<li>And misc big band stuff, including a 10 record set.<\/ul>\n<p>       Not a bad haul considering my collection and Heather&#8217;s stack cost a total of $16.50.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Ethical Society of St. Louis had a books, music, and video sale today, and we happened to find it.
