{"id":3840,"date":"2007-06-22T00:09:00","date_gmt":"2007-06-22T00:09:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/blog\/?p=3840"},"modified":"2017-11-27T11:38:57","modified_gmt":"2017-11-27T17:38:57","slug":"a-clarification-and-defense-of-masculinity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/blog\/2007\/06\/22\/a-clarification-and-defense-of-masculinity\/","title":{"rendered":"A Clarification and Defense of Masculinity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When my wife came home from a recent evening event, she saw that I was watching <i><a href=\"http:\/\/imdb.com\/title\/tt0318283\/\" target=\"_new\">Alex &#038; Emma<\/a><\/i> on DVD.  &#8220;You&#8217;re watching a chick flick!&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I am not,&#8221; I defended, &#8220;It&#8217;s an author flick.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Allow me to justify my behavior.<\/p>\n<p>Although I concede that it has all the earmarks of chick flick feminine wish fulfillment:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>No-nonsense working woman\n<li>With a lot of opinions, with which she is forcefully forthcoming\n<li>And &#8220;quirks&#8221; <strike>identify her as high-maintenance and probably controlling when they exist in a woman in real life<\/strike>\n<li>Meets a flawed but cute man\n<li>Whose initial impression and silly bachelor ways she overlooks\n<li>And they fall in love.<\/ul>\n<p>Friends, I agree, those are the earmarks of a chick flick.  However, this particular movie plays upon those conventions and, although they sucker women into thinking the movie is directed at them, it&#8217;s not.  It&#8217;s every <i>author&#8217;s<\/i> fantasy fulfilled:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>An author living in a comfortable loft downtown (<i>Boston, not St. Louis<\/i>)\n<li>Tricks an innocent stenographer to his lair\n<li>Where he dictates a potboiler novel,\n<li>A follow-up to a wildly successful debut novel,\n<li>Pausing only to nail a woman who looks like Kate Hudson\n<li>And when he completes the draft in 30 days\n<li>The publisher loves it without a single jot of revision required\n<li>And immediately pays the author a six-figure advance.\n<li>Meanwhile, the author tells the stenographer he &#8220;loves&#8221; her\n<li>And she buys it\n<li>So he will get to nail her again.<\/ul>\n<p>You tell me who gets gratified more from this movie.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When my wife came home from a recent evening event, she saw that I was watching Alex &#038; Emma on DVD. &#8220;You&#8217;re watching a chick flick!&#8221; she said. &#8220;I am not,&#8221; I defended, &#8220;It&#8217;s an author flick.&#8221; Allow me to justify my behavior.
