{"id":35105,"date":"2026-04-09T09:32:11","date_gmt":"2026-04-09T14:32:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/blog\/?p=35105"},"modified":"2026-04-09T09:32:11","modified_gmt":"2026-04-09T14:32:11","slug":"i-dont-miss-them-because-i-drive-old-vehicles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/blog\/2026\/04\/09\/i-dont-miss-them-because-i-drive-old-vehicles\/","title":{"rendered":"I Don&#8217;t Miss Them Because I Drive Old Vehicles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ace.aaa.com\/publications\/auto\/drive-smart\/discontinued-auto-features.html\" target=\"_new\">11 auto features that we miss<\/a> (titled &#8220;The Good Old Ways: Many once-common features removed from today&#8217;s cars are now sorely missed in the <em>AAA Explorer<\/em> magazine from which I tore the article one evening).<\/p>\n<p>They are:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b>Uncovered engines<\/b>; after about 20 years, the list plastic pegs disappear, so they gradually become less covered over time.<\/li>\n<li><b>Oil dipsticks<\/b>; the newest car amongst us still has one, as the oldest kept seeing a warning light and tried to use the dipstick but ended up overfilling his oil.<\/li>\n<li><b>Analog instruments<\/b>; two of the three vehicles have spinning pointers, but they&#8217;re probably electronically determined.<\/li>\n<li><b>Buttons, knobs, and levers<\/b>; two of our three still have buttons for heating and radio and whatnot.  To be honest, I don&#8217;t know about the newest vehicle because I don&#8217;t drive it.  One of our three even <em>has no screen<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li><b>Unconnected infotainment systems<\/b>; one of them has a screen, but it does not play videos&#8211;although it will play DVDs&#8217; audio, as I have learned, so I can listen to DVD lectures.<\/li>\n<li><b>Full-size spare tires<\/b>; one of the three does.  Which means it has one more Tire Pressure Monitoring System sensors to report low pressure at odd moments.<\/li>\n<li><b>Glorious color<\/b>; Well, one of the three is not black or white.<\/li>\n<li><b>CD players<\/b>; at least two of the three do have it&#8211;and one has an audiocassette player.  If we get a newer car, I will want a CD player installed as I have lots of audiocourses to get through yet.<\/li>\n<li><b>Unpainted bumpers<\/b>; yeah, no, all plastic and will total the cars if bumped.<\/li>\n<li><b>Printed owner\u2019s manual<\/b>; at least two of the tree have them, and I&#8217;ve looked in one of those two in the last week (story forthcoming, maybe).<\/li>\n<li><b>Drivers<\/b>; we don&#8217;t have any of the new lane assist or blindspot warnings even.  I work in tech.
