{"id":34730,"date":"2026-01-04T08:01:05","date_gmt":"2026-01-04T14:01:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/blog\/?p=34730"},"modified":"2026-01-03T15:10:07","modified_gmt":"2026-01-03T21:10:07","slug":"engineering-i-remembered","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/blog\/2026\/01\/04\/engineering-i-remembered\/","title":{"rendered":"Engineering I Remembered"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While I was researching <a href=\"https:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/blog\/2026\/01\/03\/not-depicted\/\" target=\"_new\">yesterday&#8217;s post<\/a> (that is, reading the Wikipedia entry on the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Surfside_condominium_collapse\" target=\"_new\">Surfside condominium collapse<\/a>), it (the Wikipedia entry) mentioned that the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hyatt_Regency_walkway_collapse\" target=\"_new\">Hyatt Regency walkway collapse<\/a> was the most deadly (non-aviation) engineering failure in history (so far).  In that disaster, a walkway loaded with party attendees gave way and collapsed onto a ballroom floor with other partygoers under it.<\/p>\n<p>Ah, gentle reader; I remember the engineering failure that caused it.<\/p>\n<p>I read something about it in a magazine, or perhaps in the hotel itself&#8211;might we have stayed there on one of our trips to Kansas City over the years?  But I think it was a magazine because I remember seeing a diagram like this:<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/bsgfx\/hyattwalkway.png\"><\/p>\n<p>It has stuck in my head over the years.
