\nSlate-grey skies and relentless rural gloom. The Wiltshire idyll that my husband and I moved our young family to\u00a015\u00a0years ago entirely loses its charm at this time of year. I\u00a0long for London. For high heels on pavements. For\u00a0culture around every corner. I head to the butcher in\u00a0Tisbury, a picturesque, largely independent high street\u00a0between Shaftesbury and Salisbury, to buy something cheering for dinner. And that is when I see it: the three arched windows of the shop opposite, formerly a gift shop full of cotton nightdresses and the\u00a0type of wooden toys no child ever wants to play with, a “For Sale” sign hanging outside.<\/p>\n

\n“A bookshop?” says the solicitor we have instructed with\u00a0the conveyancing of the purchase. “Lovely, romantic\u00a0idea. You’ll go under in a year.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n

I read The Bookshop<\/em> in 2021<\/a> and saw the film in June<\/a>.<\/p>\n
