{"id":34474,"date":"2025-10-21T08:01:46","date_gmt":"2025-10-21T13:01:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/blog\/?p=34474"},"modified":"2025-10-20T18:20:04","modified_gmt":"2025-10-20T23:20:04","slug":"checking-out-the-background-books","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/blog\/2025\/10\/21\/checking-out-the-background-books\/","title":{"rendered":"Checking Out The Background Books"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So I stumbled upon a YouTube video called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=hvwBSOgOmRE\" target=\"_new\">Why Isn&#8217;t China Collapsing?<\/a> (spoiler alert: the video does not actually offer an answer), and the <strike>podcaster<\/strike> <strike>vtuber<\/strike> <strike>Mr. Beast meets Zeihan knockoff<\/strike> host, erm, <em>hosts<\/em> an &#8220;expert&#8221; on China (I put quotation marks on it because I&#8217;m not sure anyone is an expert on anything these days&#8211;I mean, I&#8217;m not even an expert on napping, but I have studied it for hours a day for decades).  And the expert has books behind him.  Which I look at closely, of course, which is how I spend my time on Zoom meetings when I can.  Which is not often, because young people on Zoom meetings these days have so few books.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/bsgfx\/storyofcivilizationinbackground.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>To our left (his right), I see a nice, dust-jacketed set of <em>The Story of Civilization<\/em>.  Mine is a mishmash of former library copies, some with dust jackets and some without.  I finished the first volume, <a href=\"https:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/blog\/2023\/08\/13\/book-report-our-oriental-heritage-by-will-and-ariel-durant-1935-1954\/\" target=\"_new\"><em>Our Oriental Heritage<\/em><\/a>, in 2023, speculating I could finish the series in a decade if I read one a year.  But, oh, gentle reader, I got bogged down in <em>The Life of Greece<\/em> last year.  And just earlier this year, I bought a copy of <em>The Age of Voltaire<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/blog\/2025\/08\/24\/good-book-hunting-saturday-august-23-2025-friends-of-the-christian-county-library-nixa-branch-sale\/\" target=\"_new\">in Nixa<\/a>, and I put the lesser copy on the free book cart at church, where it has languished for over a month.<\/p>\n<p>To his left, our right, I see <em>Battles and Leaders of the Civil War<\/em> which looked awfully familiar.  I might have a set of those around here, inherited from my beautiful wife&#8217;s uncle eighteen years ago.  I see that the &#8220;expert&#8221; has them shelved out-of-order though.<\/p>\n<p>You know, I should step away from the computer here and sit in the reading chair to work on some <a href=\"https:\/\/thenewneo.com\/2025\/10\/20\/open-thread-10-20-2025\/\" target=\"_new\">reading stamina<\/a> if I ever hope to get through these two sets plus Sandburg&#8217;s biography of Abraham Lincoln (4 volumes), Churchill&#8217;s history of World War II (6 volumes), Churchill&#8217;s History of the English Speaking Peoples (4 volumes), and Ben Wolf&#8217;s &#8220;Ghost&#8221; trilogy (3 volumes).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So I stumbled upon a YouTube video called Why Isn&#8217;t China Collapsing?
