{"id":33209,"date":"2024-10-25T07:49:37","date_gmt":"2024-10-25T12:49:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/blog\/?p=33209"},"modified":"2024-10-24T15:15:26","modified_gmt":"2024-10-24T20:15:26","slug":"a-tale-of-two-brooklines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/blog\/2024\/10\/25\/a-tale-of-two-brooklines\/","title":{"rendered":"A Tale of Two Brooklines"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When filling out my address, I sometimes get <b>Brookline Station<\/b> pre-populated in the city field.<\/p>\n<p>As I have mentioned (most extensively <a href=\"https:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/blog\/2012\/04\/04\/gritty-urban-scenes-from-southwest-missouri\/\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">twelve years ago<\/a>), my post office is up in Brookline, which was a small railroad town on the Frisco line.  So I always assumed that the <em>Station<\/em> referred to the train station up in Brookline.<\/p>\n<p>For some reason, I was looking at a map recently and noticed that it had another entry called Brookline Station far distant from Brookline:<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/bsgfx\/brooklinestation.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>Brookline Station is actually closer to Nogglestead proper.<\/p>\n<p>This history gives an account of <a href=\"https:\/\/thelibrary.org\/lochist\/history\/holcombe\/grch23.html\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">the history of Brookline Township<\/a> (from 1883, so a recent historical account) which indicates that the town of Brookline, which is in the upper corner of Brookline Township, was indeed a railroad town.  It does not mention Brookline Station at all.<\/p>\n<p>However, Brookline Station might have been a part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/butterfieldoverlandstage.com\/2012\/08\/01\/maps-of-the-route\/\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">Butterfield Mail Stage Route<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Fifteen years on, and I&#8217;m still learning about the area.  Not that my neighbors have deep historical ties; only two or three families in the immediate area precede us in residency.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When filling out my address, I sometimes get Brookline Station pre-populated in the city field.
