{"id":30773,"date":"2023-02-16T07:30:43","date_gmt":"2023-02-16T13:30:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/blog\/?p=30773"},"modified":"2023-02-16T07:30:43","modified_gmt":"2023-02-16T13:30:43","slug":"too-old-even-for-trivia-nights","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/blog\/2023\/02\/16\/too-old-even-for-trivia-nights\/","title":{"rendered":"Too Old Even For Trivia Nights"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So I posted on the Professionalbook:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The Problems of Having Senior in Your Job Title, Part XLIV:<\/p>\n<p>On a popcorn-style Scrum with default layout of 9 tiles, when you finish your update and say, &#8220;Dan to block,&#8221; and you look at the other tiles and realize none of your co-workers has ever seen Hollywood Squares.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I included an image I found on the Internet:<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/bsgfx\/hollywoodsquares.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>My beautiful professional wife said she only knew three of the names, one from Wesson Oil commercials and two from <em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_New_Scooby-Doo_Movies\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">The New Scooby-Doo Movies<\/em><\/a> cartoons.<\/p>\n<p><em>Alors!<\/em>  I knew most of the celebrities in the squares above:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Robert Blake, Baretta and the priest in <em>Hell Town<\/em>, later charged with killing his wife (twenty years ago).  I&#8217;d forgotten that he was acquited.<\/li>\n<li>Phyllis Diller, comedienne and, like me, former resident of Old Trees, Missouri, where she lived in the part with the really big houses.<\/li>\n<li>Rich Little, the impressionist.<\/li>\n<li>Karen Valentine, actress from the show <em>Room 222<\/em> and some Disney movies&#8211;I had to look her up.<\/li>\n<li>Paul Lynde, comedian and best known to me for being the center square on <em>Hollywood Squares<\/em>.  I said to my wife that she probably could not hear his voice in her head, but I can&#8211;I saw him most recently in a skit on <em><a href=\"https:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/blog\/2022\/07\/19\/on-the-best-of-the-dean-martin-show-1965-1974\/\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">The Dean Martin Show<\/em><\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Mac Davis, the singer best known for &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/blog\/2015\/01\/27\/brian-j-parental-saboteur\/\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">Hard to be Humble<\/a>&#8220;.  My wife didn&#8217;t know the singer, but she hears a rendition of it frequently when I sing &#8220;Oh, <a href=\"https:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/blog\/2016\/10\/18\/roark-triumphant\/\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">Roark<\/a>, it&#8217;s hard to be humble,&#8221; to the cat.<\/li>\n<li>Anthony Newley, a British singer of some sort.  I had to look him up.<\/li>\n<li>Florence Henderson, Mrs. Brady and so on.  Which includes Wesson Oil commercials.<\/li>\n<li>Robert Fuller, who I looked up, but I would have recognized him in a clearer picture&#8211;he was the head doctor in <em>Emergency!<\/em>, a television program my sainted mother loved.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So I knew seven of nine.<\/p>\n<p>But they&#8217;re too old and too trivial for modern trivia nights, which include no history questions and where pop culture began in the 1980s or later.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s weird, though: My pop culture trivia knowledge extends a bunch to the decades before I was born&#8211;by the time they were on <em>Hollywood Squares<\/em>, these stars were in the coasting tail end of their careers, but I knew them.  Perhaps because they were in reruns when I was young, but also perhaps because I wanted to make a good showing in Trivial Pursuit, that new fashionable game in the 1980s, where the questions aimed at the <em>thirtysomething<\/em> crowd would have included these actors and performers from their childhoods and youth.
