{"id":30044,"date":"2022-07-01T08:20:31","date_gmt":"2022-07-01T13:20:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/blog\/?p=30044"},"modified":"2022-07-01T08:20:31","modified_gmt":"2022-07-01T13:20:31","slug":"the-myth-of-the-modern-soft-switch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/blog\/2022\/07\/01\/the-myth-of-the-modern-soft-switch\/","title":{"rendered":"The Myth of the Modern Soft Switch"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve recently (well, four years ago) posted <a href=\"https:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/blog\/2018\/07\/16\/the-myth-of-the-modern-hard-switch\/\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">The Myth of the Modern Hard Switch<\/a> about on\/off switches that looked to be actual physical switches but really just prompted software.<\/p>\n<p>Well, it&#8217;s worse with purely software switches, of course.<\/p>\n<p>As you might know, I have used a wide variety of computer-based video conferencing bits of software, and they all have a mute button that purportedly turns off your microphone.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, but no.<\/p>\n<p>Google Meets serves up this helpful reminder:<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/bsgfx\/areyoutalking.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>A helpful reminder that, although you have the mute button on, Google is still listening.  It&#8217;s just not sharing the audio with the other people.<\/p>\n<p>Note that this displays after I have given Google permission to use the Web camera, and the green light is on.  But still.
