{"id":29937,"date":"2022-06-04T12:48:04","date_gmt":"2022-06-04T17:48:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/blog\/?p=29937"},"modified":"2022-06-04T12:48:04","modified_gmt":"2022-06-04T17:48:04","slug":"wreckification-of-names","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/blog\/2022\/06\/04\/wreckification-of-names\/","title":{"rendered":"Wreckification of Names"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So as I was driving to the dojo this morning, &#8220;The End of the World (As We Know It)&#8221; by REM came on the radio, and it struck me that the song names three people with similar names:  Lenny Bruce, Leonard Bernstein, and Leonid Brezhnev.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Z0GFRcFm-aY\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>And I thought, are those all forms of the same name?<\/p>\n<p>Lenny is short for Leonard, of course, but apparently Leonid is not the direct Slavic equivalent&#8211;it comes from a shortened form of Leonidas.  However, all three do derive from the Greek for lion (<em>Leon<\/em>).  So is there any meaning in this within the song?<\/p>\n<p>I have no idea; however, in reviewing the actual lyrics, apparently a fourth man is named, Lester Bangs, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lester_Bangs\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">a rock critic who died in 1982<\/a>.  Lester, apparently, comes from <em>Leicester<\/em>, the English city, and referred to a person from the town.  So I got nothing as far as a grand revelation.  And I&#8217;m not enough of an REM fan to write a treatise on it.<\/p>\n<p>(Name meanings from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.behindthename.com\/\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\">Behind the Name<\/a>, the first result in a search for the meaning of Leonid.
