{"id":2839,"date":"2005-12-15T02:38:00","date_gmt":"2005-12-15T07:38:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/blog\/?p=2839"},"modified":"2010-04-20T22:34:55","modified_gmt":"2010-04-21T03:34:55","slug":"book-report-mommy-knows-worst-by-james-lileks-2005","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/blog\/2005\/12\/15\/book-report-mommy-knows-worst-by-james-lileks-2005\/","title":{"rendered":"Book Report: Mommy Knows Worst by James Lileks (2005)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I bought <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/1400082285\/lilekscom-20?creative=327641&#038;camp=14573&#038;adid=0WYJ6MVYYPM7STNAR2W8&#038;link_code=as1\" target=\"_new\">this book<\/a> at the local Borders <i>at full price<\/i> because I enjoyed <i>Interior Desecrations<\/i>, and I cannot handle a day I don&#8217;t start with a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lileks.com\/bleats\/\" target=\"_new\">Bleat<\/a>.  Also, Lileks&#8217; is the life I want to live, to the point that I am shaving myself a high forehead to go totally all <i>Single White Female<\/i>.  Perhaps I&#8217;m revealing too much and strengthening the case for a restraining order.<\/p>\n<p>But anyway.<\/p>\n<p>If you read <a href=\"http:\/\/angelweave.mu.nu\/archives\/140241.html\" target=\"_new\">it<\/a> on the Internet, it must be true; ergo, I came into this book with a different set of expectations than a casual readers, and Lileks, like a jeweller with a loupe in, took his little hammer and shattered my crystalline acceptance about my upcoming next twenty years.  There&#8217;s so much upon which I had not already dwelt.  Like <i>teething<\/i>.  For crying out loud, that&#8217;s going to last forever, and like the teeth will burst forth all snaggled from sealed gums&#8230;.Although history has proven that most have survived this ordeal, I&#8217;m not looking forward to it.<\/p>\n<p>So instead of reading this book with a knowing humor, with the shared knowledge of travails past, I have to look at it as a set of future tribulations, knowing that many of the quaint solutions we will apply will one day be the subject of Gnat&#8217;s sequel to her father&#8217;s work.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I bought this book at the local Borders at full price because I enjoyed Interior Desecrations, and I cannot handle a day I don&#8217;t start with a Bleat.
