{"id":26120,"date":"2020-04-30T07:46:12","date_gmt":"2020-04-30T12:46:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/blog\/?p=26120"},"modified":"2020-04-29T16:57:54","modified_gmt":"2020-04-29T21:57:54","slug":"a-poem-i-forgot-i-remembered","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/blog\/2020\/04\/30\/a-poem-i-forgot-i-remembered\/","title":{"rendered":"A Poem I Forgot I Remembered"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The other day, I was flipping through a paperback collection of poems called <em>Immortal Poems of the English Language<\/em>, a gift from my high school National Honor Society Secret Pal (a year-long Secret Santa type deal) at the end of the 1989 school year, when I came across &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.poetryfoundation.org\/poems\/44658\/to-lucasta-going-to-the-wars\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">To Lucasta, Going to the Wars<\/a>&#8221; by Richard Lovelace:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Tell me not (Sweet) I am unkind,<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;That from the nunnery<br \/>\nOf thy chaste breast and quiet mind<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;To war and arms I fly.<\/p>\n<p>True, a new mistress now I chase,<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The first foe in the field;<br \/>\nAnd with a stronger faith embrace<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;A sword, a horse, a shield.<\/p>\n<p>Yet this inconstancy is such<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;As you too shall adore;<br \/>\nI could not love thee (Dear) so much,<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Lov\u2019d I not Honour more.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I had forgotten I remember that poem.<\/p>\n<p>I memorized it and performed it once or twice in my coffee house open mic days (whose memories <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Coffee-House-Memories-Brian-Noggle\/dp\/0983212341\/\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">I have shared<\/a>).  But I&#8217;d forgotten I&#8217;d memorized it.  I mean, it&#8217;s not like the <a href=\"https:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/blog\/2018\/03\/07\/reading-edna-st-vincent-millay\/\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Edna St. Vincent Millay sonnet<\/a> that I liked to open with at a new venue, and it&#8217;s not as noteworthy as memorizing &#8220;The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock&#8221; <em>en toto<\/em>.  So I&#8217;d forgotten I know it.<\/p>\n<p>But after we wrote the poem and after my youngest boy read it, I showed them how I could recite it from memory (mostly), and pointed out that when you really liked a poem, you could memorize it and recite it and thus make the poem yours.  They did not seem excited at the prospect, although they acknowledged that they&#8217;ve memorized song lyrics.  So they know what it means.  Whether they will ever choose to memorize a poem <em>of their own accord<\/em> remains to be seen.
