{"id":26007,"date":"2020-04-12T07:39:47","date_gmt":"2020-04-12T12:39:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/blog\/?p=26007"},"modified":"2020-04-11T16:23:48","modified_gmt":"2020-04-11T21:23:48","slug":"homeschooling-modern-history-through-pop-music-unit-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/blog\/2020\/04\/12\/homeschooling-modern-history-through-pop-music-unit-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Homeschooling Modern History through Pop Music Unit 2"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday, we did spend about an hour and a half talking about &quot;<a href=\"https:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/blog\/2020\/04\/02\/homeschooling-day-xiii-history-of-the-20th-century\/\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">We Didn&#8217;t Start The Fire<\/a>&quot; and its representation of the middle of the 20th century and how great concerns that lasted for weeks were eventually distilled into a couple of words in a song (my prediction: if someone writes this for the 21st century, they&#8217;ll call it the &#8220;Wuhan flu&#8221; because of how it scans and how it can easily rhyme).<\/p>\n<p>The boys, as is their wont (or <em>won&#8217;t<\/em>) tried to do the bare minimum required, so they often had basic answers for the lyrics that were technically correct but that did not indicate <em>why<\/em> those places or names were important in the 1950s or 1960s.  And only once (Sugar Ray) in three possible did they list a band and not the actual historical figure or event (the other two being Berlin and U2).<\/p>\n<p>But I&#8217;m thinking about continuing this with another unit based on &#8220;This WIll Be My Year&#8221; by Train:<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/PfT17egn1SM\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>It lists current events from certain years between 1985 and the first decade of the 21st century.
