{"id":25870,"date":"2020-03-21T10:54:40","date_gmt":"2020-03-21T15:54:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/blog\/?p=25870"},"modified":"2020-04-02T16:04:49","modified_gmt":"2020-04-02T21:04:49","slug":"a-big-part-of-the-soundscape-in-our-apartment-in-the-projects","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/blog\/2020\/03\/21\/a-big-part-of-the-soundscape-in-our-apartment-in-the-projects\/","title":{"rendered":"A Big Part Of The Soundscape In Our Apartment in the Projects"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2020\/03\/21\/kenny-rogers-dead-at-81-islands-in-the-stream-singer-had-been-in-hospice\/?_ga=2.37371296.1453464948.1584735292-1625176291.1584735292\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kenny Rogers has passed away<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve seen him recently in the news as he played in Branson a couple years ago, and the review was a little harsh as he was older and couldn&#8217;t do what he&#8217;d done in better years.<\/p>\n<p>The best of those years probably came in the early 1980s when he had great crossover success with songs like &#8220;Islands in the Stream&#8221;, &#8220;Lady&#8221;, and &#8220;Love Will Turn You Around&#8221; not to mention the country staples like &#8220;The Gambler&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>My favorite Kenny Rogers song was &#8220;Coward of the County&#8221;:<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rpnmfbLiRng\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Mainly because I was a scrawny kid, and I hoped I would be able to lash out appropriately if needed.  Apparently not, or perhaps I really never needed it.<\/p>\n<p>Like &#8220;The Gambler&#8221;, this song was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=dwZHTf9midA\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">turned into a television movie<\/a> that I probably saw back in the day.  Before cable television and the Internet, gentle reader, you pretty much had to watch what was on, and we did.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m also a fan of the recent song &#8220;The Greatest&#8221;:<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ATQ5Tab3eXY\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Although a little research indicates that this song is <em>twenty-three years old<\/em>.  In my defense, I didn&#8217;t listen to country in the late 1990s, and I was exposed to the song as I started to mow the lawn at Nogglestead and could only pull in a &#8220;classic&#8221; country station.  Which is also why I thought <a href=\"https:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/blog\/2019\/04\/01\/the-wisdom-of-william-r-cyrus\/\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&#8220;Could Have Been Me&#8221;<\/a> was also a recent Billy Ray Cyrus song.<\/p>\n<p>At any rate, Kenny Rogers left his mark on the music, as he was part of the pop-ization wave of country in the late 1970s and early 1980s that spawned a reactionary, more country sound in the 1990s.
