{"id":25367,"date":"2019-12-09T09:29:14","date_gmt":"2019-12-09T15:29:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/blog\/?p=25367"},"modified":"2019-12-09T09:29:14","modified_gmt":"2019-12-09T15:29:14","slug":"losing-the-mannheiming-of-christmas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/blog\/2019\/12\/09\/losing-the-mannheiming-of-christmas\/","title":{"rendered":"Losing the Mannheiming of Christmas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of the radio presets in our vehicles switches to Christmas music in mid-November, so we get our share of Christmas music that does not come from our growing collection of LPs. <\/p>\n<p>And you know what I haven&#8217;t heard on this station in the last couple of years or, to my recollection, on KEZK in St. Louis when I lived there and on recent trips back?<\/p>\n<p><em>Mannheim Steamroller<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>This band really broke through after a number of albums with its 1984 Christmas album.  I remember seeing this video on MTV with my brother; we were lying on my grandmother&#8217;s floor, and when it finished, we both said, <em>Whoa.<\/em><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/e3cEOWIwDTI\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>But you don&#8217;t hear it in the mix much these days.  Of course, the radio Christmas playlists have suddenly (maybe not suddenly?) tilted to modern artists doing secular winter songs, so you get a lot of Taylor Swift and Michael Buble, but not a lot of Steve and Eydie and whatnot.  <\/p>\n<p>So I guess that&#8217;s where Mannheim Steamroller went.  Into the past.<\/p>\n<p>I have this album, <em>Mannheim Steamroller Christmas<\/em>, and a later Christmas album, <em>Christmas in the Aire<\/em> on audio cassette.
