{"id":24553,"date":"2019-05-16T07:23:34","date_gmt":"2019-05-16T12:23:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/blog\/?p=24553"},"modified":"2019-05-16T07:23:34","modified_gmt":"2019-05-16T12:23:34","slug":"eydie-vs-keely-the-musical-smackdown","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/blog\/2019\/05\/16\/eydie-vs-keely-the-musical-smackdown\/","title":{"rendered":"Eydie vs. Keely: The Musical Smackdown"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A poor <a href=\"https:\/\/friarsfires.blogspot.com\/\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">unenlightened soul<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/blog\/2019\/05\/04\/good-album-hunting-saturday-may-4-2019-friends-of-the-springfield-greene-county-library-book-sale\/#comments\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">refuses to acknowledge the primacy of Eydie Gorme in all things musical<\/a>, so I feel the need to offer a direct comparison.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ll take Keely Smith on her home turf, with &#8220;I Wish You Love&#8221;, the title track from her 1957 debut album.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/WPJ-J3NUUyk\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Here is Eydie Gorme doing what she does best, which is <em>everything<\/em>:<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ApzLsiUa0kw\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>As I had said to Friar, I&#8217;ve got another Keely Smith album (<a href=\"https:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/blog\/2015\/07\/07\/new-thrift-store-record-finds\/\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Be My Love<\/em><\/a>) that hasn&#8217;t really stood out, and I think it&#8217;s because Keely sounds like a lot of other female big band vocalists I&#8217;ve heard, where the delivery is flat and a bit projected since there&#8217;s generally an orchestra behind them whereas Eydie is more pop\/jazz influenced, where the notes are rounder and the presentation more intimate.<\/p>\n<p>Your actual mileage may vary, but understand that no matter <a href=\"http:\/\/friarsfires.blogspot.com\/2019\/05\/wrong-but-thats-alright.html\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">what scientific measurement you apply<\/a>, Eydie Gorme is always the best.
