{"id":23856,"date":"2018-11-16T13:02:38","date_gmt":"2018-11-16T19:02:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/blog\/?p=23856"},"modified":"2020-06-14T14:55:00","modified_gmt":"2020-06-14T19:55:00","slug":"book-report-zen-and-the-art-of-knitting-by-bernadette-murphy-2002","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/blog\/2018\/11\/16\/book-report-zen-and-the-art-of-knitting-by-bernadette-murphy-2002\/","title":{"rendered":"Book Report: <i>Zen and the Art of Knitting<\/i> by Bernadette Murphy (2002)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/bsgfx\/zenandtheartofknitting.jpg\" width=\"200\" alt=\"Book cover\" align=\"right\" hspace=\"4\">I read the original (<em>Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance<\/em>) <a href=\"https:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/blog\/2018\/10\/02\/book-report-zen-and-the-art-of-motorcycle-maintenance-by-robert-r-pirisg-1974-1984\/\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">earlier this year<\/a>, and I told someone (probably the precocious kid at my martial arts school who likes to read philosophical works, or perhaps my beautiful wife) that I wanted to read <em>that<\/em> volume so I could read this sequel to it, as <em>this<\/em> volume was on the outer rank of my to-read books in the hall and was hence present any time that I went looking for a new book to read <em>and<\/em> did not have something I&#8217;d bought that week that I wanted to jump right into.  As you can tell, <em>gentle<\/em> reader, my Web host offered me a <em>good<\/em> deal on italics this week, so watch <em>this space<\/em> for their overuse.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not a sequel, of course; it&#8217;s one of the books that play upon the title of the Pirsig work and call themselves <em>Zen and the Art of <\/em>something.  <\/p>\n<p>In this case, it&#8217;s knitting.  The author does play up some of the mindfulness and &#8220;in the zone&#8221; elements you can get into when you&#8217;re sort of focusing on your knitting, but when the habits of the hands leave the mind free to wander or not.<\/p>\n<p>However, this is not a particularly compelling book.<\/p>\n<p>It really doesn&#8217;t have much to say aside from the description above; each chapter doesn&#8217;t really build upon a theme.  Instead, it&#8217;s a series of interviews that the author has with creative professionals, educators, or her aunt the nun about what knitting means to each.
