{"id":2054,"date":"2005-03-15T21:50:00","date_gmt":"2005-03-15T21:50:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/blog\/?p=2054"},"modified":"2018-07-06T08:47:42","modified_gmt":"2018-07-06T13:47:42","slug":"2054","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/blog\/2005\/03\/15\/2054\/","title":{"rendered":"They Must Have Run Out of Tobacco Lawsuit Money"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Newark, New Jersey, used homeland security grants <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nypost.com\/news\/regionalnews\/42584.htm\" target=\"_new\">to buy garbage trucks<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p> Newark used federal Department of Homeland Security funds to help pay for 10 top-of-the-line, air-conditioned garbage trucks \u2014 and a group of state lawmakers think that stinks.<\/p>\n<p>Newark unveiled its new garbage trucks last month \u2014 and boasted that the financing had partly come from &#8220;Homeland Security grants.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Republican lawmakers yesterday blasted the city for &#8220;misuse&#8221; of federal money.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It goes to the heart of credibility,&#8221; said Assemblyman Joseph Pennacchio, who noted New Jersey officials have been lobbying for more anti-terror funds.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You can&#8217;t say we&#8217;re buying garbage trucks on one hand and we&#8217;re not getting enough Homeland Security money on the other.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Not to mention that it&#8217;s illegal to buy garbage trucks with a Homeland Security grant, says the department. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>To the lower governments, Federal tax dollars represent a fungible slush fund for whatever they want to buy.
