Every once in a while, they post stories about companies leaving St. Louis, such as this analysis piece from February 5: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stltoday.com\/stltoday\/business\/stories.nsf\/0\/A45030DF8889061286256F9F0063CC1F?OpenDocument&#038;Headline=Does+loss+of+company+HQs+hurt+St.+Louis%3F\">Does loss of company HQs hurt St. Louis?<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>St. Louis lost yet another homegrown corporate headquarters last week with the announced buyout of Pulitzer Inc.<\/p>\n<p>And if the swirling rumors about a buyout of May Department Stores Co. are to be believed, an even larger corporate base could quickly follow Pulitzer out the door.<\/p>\n<p>But while the region&#8217;s business leaders grit their teeth, they must ponder this question: Job loss aside, does it really matter if a corporation no longer calls your city home?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So they gnash their teeth for a bit, but then they jump on the bandwagon for the local labor whenever a local union strikes.  Oddly enough, the <i>Post-Dispatch<\/i> cheerleads local labor strife and at any given time, the <i>Post-Dispatch<\/i> has at least one high profile dispute to rah-rah.  Why, in 2004, we had:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.stltoday.com\/stltoday\/entertainment\/stories.nsf\/music\/story\/872B167231BA80C686256FAC0023A1B6?OpenDocument&#038;Headline=Symphony+will+vote+on+proposal+today\" target=\"_new\">St. Louis Symphony Orchestra<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/64.233.187.104\/search?q=cache:OzhHoNXVK_cJ:www.stltoday.com\/stltoday\/business\/stories.nsf\/story\/5AFC0AEB7213334286256F2E0013C4B5%3FOpenDocument%26Headline%3DMechanics%2Bstrike%2Bends%253B%2Bdealers%2BOK%2Bcontract+St+Louis+auto+dealers+strike+site:stltoday.com&#038;hl=en&#038;lr=lang_en\" target=\"_new\">Auto dealer mechanics<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/stlouis\/stories\/2004\/05\/24\/daily56.html\" target=\"_new\">Newspaper Guild<\/a> (oddly enough, since that union struck against the <i>Post-Dispatch<\/i>, the paper was less eager to stick it to The Man)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/64.233.187.104\/search?q=cache:ICBllV93b9cJ:www.stltoday.com\/stltoday\/business\/stories.nsf\/0\/648B696663F9CC3486256E73000D0B51%3FOpenDocument%26Headline%3DBoeing%2Bdefense%2Bworkers%2Bin%2BSt.%2BLouis%2Bauthorize%2Bstrike%2Bas%2Bbarg+St+Louis+Boeing+machinists+strike+site:stltoday.com&#038;hl=en&#038;lr=lang_en\" target=\"_new\">Boeing Machinists<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/64.233.187.104\/search?q=cache:7kwhYcl0hYEJ:www.stltoday.com\/stltoday\/business\/stories.nsf\/0\/0908EBFF2242595186256E860015BF19%3FOpenDocument%26Headline%3DUnion%2Bworkers%2Bauthorize%2BSBC%2Bstrike+St+Louis+SBC+strike+site:stltoday.com&#038;hl=en&#038;lr=lang_en\" target=\"_new\">SBC<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/64.233.187.104\/search?q=cache:mJ6EidS-Cx4J:www.stltoday.com\/stltoday\/news\/special\/healthcare.nsf\/0\/C19243381287D86A86256F21006D64B3%3FOpenDocument+St+Louis+grocery+strike+site:stltoday.com&#038;hl=en&#038;lr=lang_en\" target=\"_new\">Grocery workers<\/a> (end of 2003, I know, but it doesn&#8217;t seem that long ago)<\/p>\n<p>So why would a corporation come to or stay in St. Louis, a labor-friendly town that supports entire workforces stopping work for days, weeks, or months on end?  Perhaps the <a href=\"http:\/\/64.233.187.104\/search?q=cache:7cQVorQ846oJ:www.stltoday.com\/stltoday\/neighborhoods\/stories.nsf\/Neighborhoods\/Northeast%2BCounty%2BJournal\/News\/867417B1539852BB86256F540078FA1C%3Fopendocument%26Headline%3DPublic%2520money%252C%2520public-private%2520gain+St+Louis+ford+incentives+site:stltoday.com&#038;hl=en&#038;lr=lang_en\" target=\"_new\">tax incentives<\/a> that the local and state governments favor and the <i>Post-Dispatch<\/i> lauds.<\/p>\n<p>The climate for business, particularly the manufacturing and blue collar businesses whose employees the <i>Post-Dispatch<\/i> champions, is difficult, murky, and prone to the whims of organized labor and government largesse.
