{"id":1822,"date":"2005-01-04T16:54:00","date_gmt":"2005-01-04T16:54:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/blog\/?p=1822"},"modified":"2018-07-28T15:29:28","modified_gmt":"2018-07-28T20:29:28","slug":"1822","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/blog\/2005\/01\/04\/1822\/","title":{"rendered":"Great Moments in Sentence Writing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A BBC piece entitled &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/south_asia\/4144405.stm\" target=\"_new\">Tribe shoots arrows at aid flight<\/a>&#8221; features a number of illustrations about how pronoun abuse hurts everyone:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Officials believe <b>they<\/b> survived the devastation by using age-old early warning systems.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>No, I think that the officials survived the devestation by being elsewhere when the devestation occured.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Scientists are examining the possibility to see whether <b>it<\/b> can be used to predict earth tremors in future. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The last sentence represents the worst sentence I have seen in a long, long time.  &#8220;The possibility&#8221; doesn&#8217;t really have an antecedent in the preceding paragraphs; I think the author meant that scientists were going to examine the actual actions of the tribes to determine if, possibly, they have a line on predicting tsunamis that won&#8217;t cost money.  <\/p>\n<p>But the idea of using a possibility kinda scrums me.  It sounds kinda Star Trek, ainna?  <i>But Captain, we can use the Solar Possibility to metaphase the Enterprise back in time four days&#8230;.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>On a side note to the natives who tried to shoot the planes with bows and arrows: although you, too, have watched the computer players&#8217; spearmen hold off your tanks in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.civ3.com\" target=\"_new\">Civilization III<\/a>, it&#8217;s not that easy in real life.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A BBC piece entitled &#8220;Tribe shoots arrows at aid flight&#8221; features a number of illustrations about how pronoun abuse hurts everyone: Officials believe they survived the devastation by using age-old early warning systems.
