{"id":16999,"date":"2017-10-13T15:44:19","date_gmt":"2017-10-13T20:44:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/blog\/?p=16999"},"modified":"2017-10-13T15:44:19","modified_gmt":"2017-10-13T20:44:19","slug":"book-report-beijing-china-ca-2002","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/blog\/2017\/10\/13\/book-report-beijing-china-ca-2002\/","title":{"rendered":"Book Report: <i>Beijing China<\/i> (ca. 2002)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/bsgfx\/beijingchina.jpg\" width=\"200\" alt=\"Book cover\" align=\"right\" hspace=\"4\">I got this book at a later time than the Korea guide books (<em><a href=\"https:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/blog\/2014\/11\/19\/book-report-new-pearl-of-the-orient-korea-by-korea-national-tourism-corporation-1980\/\" target=\"_new\">The New Pearl of the Orient<\/a><\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/blog\/2014\/10\/06\/book-report-bomun-temple-in-seoul-korea-and-wonderful-korea\/\" target=\"_new\"><em>Bomun Temple in Seoul Korea<\/em>, and <em>Wonderful Korea<\/em><\/a>, but I kind of thought of them as a genre and similar; however, this volume is relatively recent (post 2002).  So it refers to the 2008 Olympics, which is jarring.<\/p>\n<p>At any rate, it&#8217;s an interesting browse.  The photos are good, with just a hint of lauding the State in some of the building selections, but it does not completely overlook the historical or religious sites of Beijing.  As I <a href=\"https:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/blog\/2017\/10\/07\/good-book-hunting-friday-october-6-2017-the-friends-of-the-lebanon-laclede-county-library-book-sale\/\" target=\"_new\">just bought<\/a> a book on Rococo style, I can&#8217;t help but compare Chinese\/Oriental interior design principles to the couple of things I looked at in that book before I bought it.  Were I Lileks or Driscoll, I could probably write intelligently about it.  Maybe some day, after many Sunday afternoons watching football games with architecture and design books on my lap.
