It is common knowledge and longstanding industry practice, they say, that names such as two-by-four or four-by-four do not describe the width and thickness of those pieces of lumber.<\/p>\n<p>Rather, the retailers say, those are \u201cnominal\u201d designations accepted in government-approved industry standards, which also specify actual minimum dimensions \u2014 1\u00bd inches by 3\u00bd inches for a two-by-four, for example, and 3\u00bd inches by 3\u00bd inches for a four-by-four.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Mein Gott, this has been that way forever.  People who use lumber know it.  But apparently not some people easily influenced by trial attorneys.
