{"id":155,"date":"2003-07-31T23:56:00","date_gmt":"2003-07-31T23:56:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/blog\/?p=155"},"modified":"2018-08-02T05:32:13","modified_gmt":"2018-08-02T10:32:13","slug":"155","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/blog\/2003\/07\/31\/155\/","title":{"rendered":"Journalist Steals Our Heritage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today&#8217;s <i>Washington Post<\/i> has a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/articles\/A5690-2003Jul30.html\" target=\"new\">story<\/a> about the New Zealish guy who&#8217;s doing a complete <a href=\"www.asciimation.co.nz\" target=\"new\">ASCII art remake of <i>Star Wars<\/i><\/a>.  Unfortunately, the author makes the astonishing claim:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Anyone who&#8217;s ever come near a computer knows how to create little text &#8220;emoticons,&#8221; such as a sideways smiley face :-) or a winking face ;-), but Jansen has taken this idea to extravagant, or possibly insane, extremes. He&#8217;s tapped out whole &#8220;Star Wars&#8221; tableaux &#8212; hyper-driven spaceships, storming Storm Troopers, the famous bar scene &#8212; with nothing but dots, dashes, parentheses, asterisks and what-have-you.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Simon Jansen, the artist, is <i>not<\/i> taking emoticons to a whole new level.  ASCII art is <i>not<\/i> an extension of AOL-inspired colonic stupidity.  By making that claim, the author is denying we old-time geeks of our <i>culture<\/i> and <i>heritage<\/i> and represents a great deal of <i>insensitivity<\/i> duly worth of <i>italics<\/i> and sometimes <b>bold<\/b>!<\/p>\n<p>After all, ASCII art has been around for much longer than AOL.  Am I the only one who remembers <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zimmers.net\/bbs\/c6bbs.html\" target=\"new\">Color 64<\/a> BBSes, with their medium res ASCII animations, and St. Louis&#8217;s own <b>Dave Hartmann<\/b>?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today&#8217;s Washington Post has a story about the New Zealish guy who&#8217;s doing a complete ASCII art remake of Star Wars.
