{"id":1255,"date":"2004-08-18T14:48:00","date_gmt":"2004-08-18T14:48:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/blog\/?p=1255"},"modified":"2018-08-13T05:55:09","modified_gmt":"2018-08-13T10:55:09","slug":"1255","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/blog\/2004\/08\/18\/1255\/","title":{"rendered":"Welfare, Please"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I hate it when rich capitalist developers <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stltoday.com\/stltoday\/business\/stories.nsf\/Business\/story\/10F47741E85D839386256EF40014FE90?OpenDocument&#038;Headline=Schnucks+may+close+E.+St.+Louis+store\" target=\"_new\">aren&#8217;t too proud to beg for tax money<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Schnuck Markets Inc. plans to close its only store in East St. Louis, but the company has extended the store&#8217;s life for another 30 days while a developer tries to buy the building and negotiate a more favorable lease that would allow the store to remain open.<\/p>\n<p>Clayton developer Jim Koman has the property at 25th and State streets under contract, but <b>wants financial assistance from East St. Louis and the state of Illinois<\/b> before closing on the property, which is held in a trust with a Belleville bank.<\/p>\n<p><b>&#8220;If we don&#8217;t get some kind of support, it will be difficult for us to make this transition,&#8221; said Koman<\/b>, the president of Koman Properties. And, he added: &#8220;We don&#8217;t have an agreement with Schnucks.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So the only thing he&#8217;s guaranteeing is that he&#8217;ll take the tax dollars.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not even begging, it&#8217;s extortion, and deals like this give capitalism its slightly darker tint.
