{"id":12144,"date":"2012-11-16T06:11:21","date_gmt":"2012-11-16T12:11:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/blog\/?p=12144"},"modified":"2012-11-16T06:11:21","modified_gmt":"2012-11-16T12:11:21","slug":"the-things-you-learn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/blog\/2012\/11\/16\/the-things-you-learn\/","title":{"rendered":"The Things You Learn"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So I ordered Eddy Grant&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B000050I5F\/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=9325&#038;creativeASIN=B000050I5F&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;tag=stlbrianj-20\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Killer on the Rampage<\/em><\/a> based on the strength of its thirty-one year old hit &#8220;Electric Avenue&#8221;:<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><object width=\"420\" height=\"315\"><param name=\"movie\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/yzsRy_fCcQw?version=3&amp;hl=en_US&amp;rel=0\"><\/param><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\"><\/param><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\"><\/param><embed src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/yzsRy_fCcQw?version=3&amp;hl=en_US&amp;rel=0\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" allowfullscreen=\"true\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p>And I learned the following in my Internet research to find the album the song was from:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Electric Avenue refers to Brixton Avenue<\/strong> in London<\/b>, which was the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Electric_Avenue\" target=\"_blank\">first market street to be lit by electric lights<\/a> in the 1880s.<br \/>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><strong>The song itself refers to the 1981 Brixton Riots<\/strong>, a &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1981_Brixton_riot\" target=\"_blank\">confrontation<\/a>&#8221; between residents of Brixton and the police.  The Wikipedia entry gives you a full panoply of excuses for the riot, but it&#8217;s the usual economically depressed populace of a one race reacts violently to the death of one of their own that they blame on members of the police who are of a different race.<br \/>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li><strong>They include &#8216;1981&#8217; in reference to this riot because there have been others<\/strong>, such as the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brixton_riot_%281995%29\" target=\"_blank\">1995 Brixton Riot<\/a> which broke out, in a stunning turn of events, when economically depressed populace of a one race reacts violently to the death of one of their own that they blame on members of the police who are of a different race.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Do I sound a little dismissive of race riots?  Well, they are just about the same as people turning cars over and lighting them on fire after a sporting event.  Message: <em>Something bad happened to our team.<\/em>  In these cases, and in the cases of race riots in our country, it&#8217;s something bad happens to someone on a team who was not exactly a team player.<\/p>\n<p>At any rate, it&#8217;s an interesting trail of things to learn from a couple minutes looking for an album title.  And this afternoon, the album should arrive (on vinyl, natch).
