Christian Adams points out<\/a>, the U2 album <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B005FVA3LK\/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;tag=stlbrianj-20&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;camp=217145&#038;creative=399373&#038;creativeASIN=B005FVA3LK\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Achtung Baby<\/em><\/a> is 20 years old this month.  Which would make <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B000001FS3\/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;tag=stlbrianj-20&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;camp=217145&#038;creative=399369&#038;creativeASIN=B000001FS3\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Joshua Tree<\/em><\/a>, what, 25?  You remember the olden days, when bands had comeback albums after their initial success, and that time period was like five years?   <em>And it seemed like a long time<\/em>?<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s my favorite U2 song, &#8220;One&#8221;, which is from the album:<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ftjEcrrf7r0\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Like all good U2 songs, and by which I mean &#8220;both,&#8221; (&#8220;I Still Haven&#8217;t Found What I&#8217;m Looking For&#8221; being the other), the song starts out highly personal, where the listener can relate in a very raw fashion, and then all of a sudden we take an Automan-like left turn and Bono is singing about Universal Harmony and Feeding Africa (but not <a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB10001424052748704358904575478310504593870.html\" target=\"_blank\">manufacturing there<\/a>).  Strangely, I spent most of my youth thinking the song was about a man and a woman rehashing, again, their broken relationship, but apparently I was enjoying a meaning at odds with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shmoop.com\/u2-one\/meaning.html\" target=\"_blank\">the song&#8217;s real meaning<\/a>.  So it&#8217;s my failure as a listener that makes this song my favorite from U2.<\/p>\n<p>So I posted on Facebook about the age of <em>Achtung Baby<\/em>, and a contemporaneous friend said, &#8220;And the album hasn&#8217;t aged one bit, I still listen to it all the time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>To which I replied, &#8220;You tell yourself that. To an eighteen-year-old today, you might as well be listening to Pat Boone.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And not the metal Pat Boone:<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/z67IqrmygZY\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>What?  <em>No More Mr. Nice Guy<\/em> is fifteen years old?  <\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><iframe src=\"http:\/\/rcm.amazon.com\/e\/cm?t=stlbrianj-20&#038;o=1&#038;p=8&#038;l=as1&#038;asins=B000005KOE&#038;ref=tf_til&#038;fc1=000000&#038;IS2=1&#038;lt1=_blank&#038;m=amazon&#038;lc1=0000FF&#038;bc1=FFFFFF&#038;bg1=FFFFFF&#038;f=ifr\" style=\"width:120px;height:240px;\" scrolling=\"no\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>But he was just on Letterman the other day promoting the album.<\/p>\n<p>Now I&#8217;ve made myself feel old, old man.<\/p>\n<p><b><font color=\"red\">UPDATE:<\/font><\/b>  Welcome, <a href=\"http:\/\/booksbikesboomsticks.blogspot.com\/2011\/11\/things-were-more-like-they-used-to-be.html\" target=\"_blank\">VftP readers.<\/a>  Hey, if you&#8217;ve got a buck, I&#8217;ve got a comedy to sell you.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B006D1DFWU\/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8&#038;tag=stlbrianj-20&#038;linkCode=as2&#038;camp=217145&#038;creative=399373&#038;creativeASIN=B006D1DFWU\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Courtship of Barbara Holt<\/em><\/a> is now available for the Kindle.
