{"id":1034,"date":"2004-06-12T01:33:00","date_gmt":"2004-06-12T01:33:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/blog\/?p=1034"},"modified":"2018-08-13T15:29:21","modified_gmt":"2018-08-13T20:29:21","slug":"1034","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/brianjnoggle.com\/blog\/2004\/06\/12\/1034\/","title":{"rendered":"Sounds Like An Old Joke"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So an old joke tells us about the child who kills his parents and begs the court for mercy because he&#8217;s an orphan, but one woman in Virginia is apparently <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2004\/LAW\/06\/11\/virginia.death.row.ap\/index.html\"> using it as a defense strategy<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The only woman on Virginia&#8217;s death row doesn&#8217;t deny that she deserves punishment for having her husband and stepson killed so she could collect insurance money.<\/p>\n<p>But paying the ultimate penalty, says Teresa Lewis, is too much &#8212; especially considering the men who actually did the deed will live out their lives behind bars.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I don&#8217;t think it&#8217;s fair for the triggermen to get life, and I got the death penalty,&#8221; she said, speaking by phone through a glass partition at the Fluvanna Correctional Center for Women.<\/p>\n<p>Lewis pleaded guilty last year to arranging the slayings of her husband and stepson to collect a $250,000 insurance policy.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The punchline: the caption beneath her photo:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Lewis: &#8220;I just feel like I have something to live for.
