To be able to say "Noggle," you first must be able to say "Nah."
I got this book at ABC Books a week ago. I think in lieu of reading during football games, I will set artists’ monographs and travel books beside the recliner to browse through after a couple chapters or sections of other books I’m reading. Kind of like I used to do with comic books. I’ll […]
This BRY (Book Reading Year, roughly Christmas to Christmas), I completed, what, 111 books? The Hungry Ocean Linda Greenlaw Death Valley Scotty: The Man and the Myth Hank Johnston Taekwondo Kyorugi: Olympic Style Sparring Kuk Hyun Chung, Kyung Myung Lee, Sang H. Kim Whatever Became Of? As I mentioned yesterday, I visited the Friends of the Springfield-Greene County Library book sale yesterday. It was half-priced day, so I hit the dollar (fifty cents!) records. Sometimes, I can put those in the hold area and take all of my purchases out at once, but yesterday, I paid for the records, put them […]
As you might remember, gentle reader, I tend to run my goal year not so much from January 1 to January 1 but from sometime the week after Christmas to sometime the week after Christmas. Something about the holidays makes me reflective and, increasingly, melancholy about the passage of the year. I didn’t have that […]
As I mentioned, we headed up to ABC Books to stock up on gift cards for Christmas today, and since it was for Christmas gifts, I found myself in the spirit to buy a bunch of random things for myself. I got: Farmer Boy by Laura Ingalls Wilder. I’ve been reading them this year (most […]
On Tuesday, I helped set up for this sale, which meant I unboxed the books for the Art tables and sorted the Animal books by animal type. Little did I know that those who volunteer on Tuesday get to shop immediately when the book sale is set up. So I didn’t have my checkbook, but […]
This book fits right into my recent reading of books set in the latter part of the 1800s (which includes the Little House books, most recently Little House on the Prairie as well as Me and My Little Brain). Unlike the others, though, this is not a children’s book. Instead, it tells about Alexandra, and […]
Yesterday, my beautiful wife and I sneaked out to the Lutherans for Life rummage sale and a spot of lunch. It was hot in the gym, and they had no LPs (well, they had four, but that’s “no” in my enumeration), but they had a couple tables of books and videos. So amid the swelter […]
Unsurprisingly, the first 40 Executioner novels do not comprise forty percent of the Amazon 100 Books To Read In A Lifetime. So I didn’t do too well on the list. Well, I didn’t do too well on the list primarily because the list is heavily weighted to modern and children’s books. Neither of which I […]
Yesterday, as I mentioned, we hit a book fair at a Methodist church just outside the MSU campus. It wasn’t very large, and its selection of fiction was essentially romance novels and a pile of James Patterson books. It did, however, have some old record albums, so I was able to stock up on some […]
Novelist emerges from cult status writing about underbelly of Ozarks: A few hollows and half a universe south of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s last little house, you’ll find Daniel Woodrell. In this author’s world, Pa cooks meth and Ma sits by the potbelly with unwashed hair, her mind “broke.” The three young ones pretty much fend […]
Clearly, I am not above reading children’s books to pad my annual total (I did just complete the Little House books, for crying out loud), so why not one of those movie-novelizations-for-children that were popular in the 1980s. I say popular based on the limited knowledge that the Star Wars Storybook was disseminated far and […]
Welp, this is not one of the better entries in the series. The series by this point was progressing to more elaborate plots, and sometimes the authors handled them better (see White Line War and Devil Force). This book, however, has the trappings of elaboration, such as continent-spanning set pieces and a bunch of interlocking […]
I bought this book seven years ago because I was familiar with the name Lester del Rey, but I think I was most familiar with the name because of the publishing imprint whose juvenile science fiction books in library binding were a staple of my middle school years, at least at M. Gene Henderson Junior […]
This book fits a little in with the old timey children’s books I’ve been reading lately (Little House books, Me and My Little Brain). Whereas those books were set in the late nineteenth century, this book was written by a woman born in the late nineteenth century. As she gets older, in the early 1970s, […]
A number of years ago, my mother-in-law gave us a decorative wine bottle for Christmas. It had a madonna-and-child painted on it and a string of Christmas lights in it through a hole drilled in the back. I kind of tut-tutted it when we got it, but in the years since, we’ve taken to putting […]
